History of Shiraz Eram Garden

The initial nucleus of Eram garden was founded in Seljuk era (13th century). The garden, however, has undergone several construction stages during the history. In Zand era (1750-1794), the garden owned by a Qashqaei clan and it became the personal property of their leader, Mohammad Ali Khan Ilkhan. This garden has been the city residence of Qashqaei family for about 75 years. Later in Qajarid era (1785-1925), Nasir-al Molk bought the garden from that family and start constructing the current building. Some years later, in 1963, Eram Graden was granted to the university of Shiraz in Pahlavi era. After the Islamic revolutions in 1978, the Qashqaei family resided again for a short time in this garden.

After experiencing all the ups and downs, the garden finally turned into the botanical garden and opened to the public.

The Architecture of Eram Garden

As a typical Persian garden, Eram garden follows the architectural characteristics of the world-known sites. The Persian garden owes a special place in the mind of Iranians representing in their poetry, paintings, carpets etc.

This 110318 sq. m garden has a quadripartite layout with a pavilion siting on its western wing. A big pool is located in front of the pavilion. The garden is filled with the water-lined alleys placed at different levels all around the garden. The garden enjoys a charming greenery thanks to its high cypresses and fruit trees. As a botanical garden now, Eram garden houses more than 45 species of plants which are all labeled with descriptions.

If you are traveling in spring, you can walk along the garden and get drunk of the orange blossoms.

Eram Garden Mansion

The existing mansion was built in Qajarid era, in Naser al-din Shah era. Nassir al-Molk commissioned the construction of this three-story mansion and it was built by the creative hands of Haji Mohammad Hassan in 1823. It consists of a reception hall decorated with sash windows overlooking the garden. The basement used to be Howzkhane (a room with a pool in the middle) which is now a Museum of mineralogy.

The portico of the mansion is facing the east outlooking the charming 335-meter pool of the garden. The 2-meter columns flanking the portico are covered by the monolith slab.

Eram Garden Inscriptions

The façade of the pavilion consists of three parts depicting various stories including the Persian classic myths. The tile-work panel shows Khosrow, the Sassanid king and his love story with Shirin. On the other part, Quranic stories about Yusef and the crowd of ladies in love with him are pictured. The story of king Solomon and Bilqis, the queen of Sheba is also pictured.

There are six stone inscriptions on the eastern façade of the pavilion. The panels are inscribed by the verses of the well-known Qajarid poet, Shourideh Shirazi and the dates of the renovations and restorations of the building. The verses mostly describe the constructional stages of the garden and admire Nasir-ol Molk who commissioned the construction of Eram Garden.

If you want to visit this beautiful garden in Norouz or during the first two months of the Iranian new year (March-June), Eram garden is open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. However, in the other time of the years, the visiting hours of the garden is from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM

You need to buy a ticket about 3 € at the entrance. You can visit the garden and the museum inside.

Location of Eram Garden

Eram Graden is located at the northwest of the city of Shiraz. It is not very far from the iconic gate of the city, Quran Gate, but, other attractions of Shiraz are not really close.

Eram Garden is located at Eram square and in Eram Street. You can get off the subway at Namazi station and walk for 10 minutes to the garden.
