How can Indian nationals apply for an Iranian visa?

The most typical way for Indian nationals to apply for an Iranian visa is via Iran’s consulates in India in the first place. Iran has an embassy in New Delhi, and consulates in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Applicants may visit the consulate, submit their documents and wait for their visa to be issued. However, this process might take a while if you don’t have any relatives, friends, working partners, etc. in Iran. The reason is that usually, if you have an invitation letter or someone as your host in Iran, the process takes less time. Otherwise, you may face some problems and a possible delay in getting your visa. If you want to apply through an embassy, you can first apply to get an authorization code on Iran’s e-visa website (https://e_visa.mfa.ir/en/). Afterwards, book an appointment at the embassy and prepare all the necessary documents.
• Your passport (with 6 months of validity)
• 2 copies of your passport
• 2 passport size images
• Your visa authorization code (issued after you apply on the website mentioned above)
• Your travel itinerary (a general itinerary, including the number of days and names of cities will probably work)
• Iran visa fee (it is accepted in cash most of the times)
• A completed Iran visa application form (you can take this at the embassy)
• Hotel reservation (at least know the names of some hotels in the cities where you like to visit)

Iran Visa on Arrival for Indian passport holders

Recently, entry visas for Indian nationals are issued in the international airports of Iran as well. This sounds like one of the easiest methods for getting a visa to Iran. Before choosing the option, you need to make sure that this type of visa is issued for your passport (citizens of some countries are not able to get this type of visa). But if you choose to travel with your Indian passport, there’s no need to worry. Indian passport holders may enter Iran with a visa on arrival.

In order to get a visa on arrival, you need to proceed to the visa counter after your airplane lands. Here you need to present the following documents:
• Your passport (with 6 months of validity)
• Passport size photos
• Visa authorization code (better to get this before your trip)
• Confirmed return ticket
• Hotel reservation

Note: You might also be required to submit a travel insurance valid in Iran.

Please note that even though it’s easy to get a visa on arrival, the line of applicants can be really tiresome specially during the high seasons. Also, sometimes applicants are rejected for vague reasons. So, it is better to have a travel agency get your visa authorization code prior to traveling.
